In August 2017, Uma Venkatasubramanian commenced her PhD in Medicine at University of Otago, Christchurch, on the project 'Characterisation of changes in the EEG during and preceding microsleeps and lost-attention lapses'. 

Her Primary Supervisor is Professor Richard Jones and Co-Supervisor is Professor Lutz Beckert. 

Uma is from Chennai in India where she was an Assistant Professor in Electrical Engineering at Vellore Institute of Technology.  She gained her MSc at University of Bridgeport in USA.
